Does melatonin have a meaningful role as a sleep aid for jet lag recovery?
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND Melatonin has long been used as an over-thecounter aid to assist with hastening sleep onset and treating symptoms of jet lag, with jet lag being the most common application. The effects of jet lag are greater based on an increase in the number of time zones travelled and when experiencing eastbound travel. Jet lag may have varying effects on an individual, and is associated with cognitive and physiological deficits. Insomnia and constant sleepiness may also occur during the day. Other negative effects may include reduced attention, altered mood states, diminished memory processing, and altered executive functioning. Melatonin has numerous commercially available preparations, and in most countries is not considered a regulated substance. Despite its widespread use as a sleep aid, and its promotion as such by celebrity entertainers and media-based physicians alike, it remains unclear whether or not there is sufficient evidence to support the recommendation of this substance as a sleep aid.

Jet lag, circadian rhythm sleep disturbances, and depression: the role of melatonin and its analogs.
Traveling through several time zones results in a constellation of symptoms known as jet lag. These include reduced alertness, daytime fatigue, loss of appetite, reduced cognitive skills, and disruption of the sleep/wake cycle. In susceptible air travel passengers, jet lag may exacerbate affective illness and result in psychiatric morbidity. Dysregulation of circadian rhythms and melatonin secr...
متن کاملPerioperative melatonin use.
Melatonin is a substance chiefly produced by the pineal gland and has a key role in the sleep-wake cycle. It also has an important antioxidant role. Exogenous melatonin has a short half-life and is available in a range of preparations. Newer analogues targeted for the recently discovered melatonin MT1 and MT2 receptors have also been developed. Exogenous melatonin is used as a resynchronisation...

OBJECTIVE To determine whether doses of the pineal hormone melatonin alleviate jet lag. DESIGN Double blind, placebo controlled crossover trial. SETTING Long haul return flights from Auckland, New Zealand, to London and back. SUBJECTS Twenty volunteers with experience of transcontinental flights (eight women and 12 men aged 28 to 68). INTERVENTIONS Melatonin (or placebo) 5 mg three days...

We measured the effects of slow-release caffeine (SRC) and melatonin (Mlt) on sleep and daytime sleepiness after a seven-time zone eastbound flight. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, each of three groups of nine subjects was given either 300 mg SRC on recovery day 1 (D1) to D5 (0800) or 5 mg Mlt on preflight D-1 (1700), flight day D0 (1600), and from D1 to D3 (2300), or p...
متن کاملTreatment of shift work disorder and jet lag.
OPINION STATEMENT With the growth of the 24-hour global marketplace, a substantial proportion of workers are engaged in nontraditional work schedules and frequent jet travel across multiple time zones. Thus, shift work disorder and jet lag are prevalent in our 24/7 society and have been associated with significant health and safety repercussions. In both disorders, treatment strategies are base...
